The Spidermonkey Story
Spidermonkey was set up by Theep. Theep is originally from Trang, south Thailand and had climbed with Phi Phi Climbers since 2000. In 2005 he volunteered after the tsunami for the organization Help International Phi Phi, set up and supported by people who came to help the island rebuild and begin again after the disaster.
The same year Spidermonkey climbing opened, originally located towards Long Beach then after six months moved into the centre of town and in 2007 Spidermonkey Travel opened. In 2009 a second project on Koh Lipe in the very south of Thailand produced Spidermonkey Bar and Café, open during the high season, November to April.
Phi Phi is an incredible location for rock climbing, with fantastic routes from beginner to advanced. Some of the rock formations are so beautiful at first many people don't believe they are natural.
At SpiderMonkey, we firmly believe that anyone can climb, given the right guidance and care, and
that everyone should try it. We only employ safe, dedicated, experienced guides who not only have
a passion for climbing, but also want to share that passion with others. Safety is our first priority, and
we do not cut corners or make excuses when it comes to our climbing equipment.
We contribute our money and our equipment to any rebolting on the cliff, to improve the safety of
the routes that are available to all climbers.
We have rules and principles to ensure the safety of our climbers and our guides, and a written
statement must be signed before any climbing begins. We recognize and respect the British
Mountaineering Council's participation statement: 'The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking
and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these
activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions'.
We are registered with the tourist authority of Thailand and also have full insurance for our climbers.
We are not associated with any other climbing shops, and we only take responsibility for our own
equipment, guides and climbers.
Our doors are always open to anyone interested in climbing or in need of information. We also rent
and sell equipment if you want to climb by yourselves but don't want to carry your gear halfway
round the world! We sell great quality clothing if you need something new to climb in or want
another memory to take home.
Be safe, have fun, and happy climbing!
